Starting point (map): Beckwourth, California. Intersection of California Hwy 70 and County Road A23, elevation 4980 ft.
Route: South on A23 14 miles, right on Calpine Rd. West one mile to T intersection, turn right (North) on CA Hwy 89. The small town of Calpine on the left offers a park for a rest stop and a sometimes-open general store. The first ascent leads via a false summit at milepost 24.7 to Calpine Summit, elevation 5441 ft, at milepost 26. A fast downhill leads to Mohawk Valley at 4480 ft. Turn right on County Road A15, uphill about 4 miles past the Gold Mountain development to 5080 ft. Follow A15 into the town of Portola, meander through downtown, then left on Gulling Street over the bridge over the railroad and Feather River. Turn right immediately after the bridge, go two blocks to the bike path that leads east along the river, coming out on the Hwy 70 bypass road along the river, to Hwy 70 at the Grizzly Rd intersection, right (East) on Hwy 70 back to starting point.
