Making preliminary plans for a future hiking/backpacking trip with M. to the Desatoya Mountain Range, east of Fallon, Nevada. This photo of Bighorn Sheep is from the top of the ridge there in June 1995, I haven’t been back since. There’s a fairly recent summitpost.org description of Desatoya Twins, with several ascent options. Back in ’95, J. and I climbed to the main ridge up a steep ridge along the north side of Big Den canyon, then on the return descended down a very steep rock field into the upper portion of the Big Den–not good for knees or ankles. M. and I are considering an approach along Campbell Creek from just east of Carrol Summit on old highway 50. We may do a reconnaisance daytrip before the main event, to check out the road access and snow pack. Some maps and possible routes. Looking forward to this trip!
