With great expectations for our first hike in the Sierra Nevada this season, we headed for a section of the Pacific Crest Trail north of Truckee. Unfortunately, our estimation of the snowpack (after less than 50% of normal snowpack and very warm weather in Reno in May) was severely optimistic. We hit too much snow for the Explorer at 7000 feet elevation (above). We trudged up the road, mostly over snow, to the PCT trailhead at 7600 feet, but determined we wouldn’t be able to follow the trail. Well, there’s always another time!
