Not so far on the other side of Donner Pass is the Grouse Ridge Recreation Area, a National Forest Service roadless area with lots of lakes and hiking trails. It’s a gorgeous area we hadn’t explored before. It was a little too early with snow covering the higher elevations making it hard to follow the otherwise well-established trails. Also, the maps in both of our GPS’s are outdated with apparently long abandoned (or just wrong?) trail routes–the 2000 USGS topo map is a must for navigation, and not all the trails there are current. Although losing the trail and bushwacking over snow made this a more challenging hike than expected, it was nonetheless a great dayhike. We’ll want to come back to this area soon.
