Storms last week finally brought new snow (lots!) to the Sierra Nevada, in time for Presidents’ Day weekend. Knowing most backcountry places would be too deep to go far, we headed for the popular Castle Pass trail near Donner Pass on I-80. The snowshoe trail was indeed already well packed, about two feet deep in powder (see above), though narrow. It was a crisp, mostly sunny day, a bit windy and cold on the pass but pleasant through the woods. The parking on the holiday weekend was a bit crazy ($5 day permit for the California Sno-Park, available at the adjacent Boreal Motel).
