This was my third attempt to the summit of Snowflower Mountain, previously stymied by snow or cold wind. Started at the main Thomas Creek Trailhead, at the end of Timberline Road. The hike can be considerably shortened (by 6 miles r.t. and 1100 feet) by driving up the 4wd road to the upper wilderness trailhead (high-clearance vehicle required for a ford across the creek beyond the left fork). Just beyond the Mt. Rose Wilderness boundary, several new sections of trail have been constructed in the last year, as part of the Rim-to-Reno Trail system, bypassing two creek crossings and a marshy area on the old trail. Climbing the summit block requires some rock hopping, but nothing technical. Snowflower Mountain is also known as Sunflower Mountain on some maps.
