Great spring day for a hike on Peavine Peak, from the Red Metal trailhead north of Reno. This area has pockets of aspen groves, pine forest, and mountain mahogany stands. Nice views of Cold Springs valley, Petersen Mountain, and the Bald Mountain range. The descent on this route is a quite steep road with loose rock; returning by the same route as the ascent would be easier.

Trailhead directions: Take the Red Rock Road exit from US 395 north of Reno. Follow the gravel frontage road on the south/west side of the highway 1.5 miles to the top of the hill overlooking Cold Springs valley. Regular cars should park before crossing the railroad tracks. High-clearance 4WD vehicles take the left fork immediately past the tracks, 1000 ft on a rutted road to the trailhead parking.
