Hike up a canyon in the Painted Hills, off of Pyramid Lake Highway west of the reservation boundary. ¬†This route goes past a popular climbing wall and the “monkey condos” rock formation. Beautiful, colorful desert area.

Trailhead directions: High-clearance vehicle required. The turn-off from Hwy 445 at coordinates¬†39.86488,-119.64621 is 3.0 miles east of the Pyramid Lake Paiute Reservation boundary. Turn north from the highway through a cattle guard then turn right at the gravel pit after about 900 ft, then follow the ‘main’ dirt road over a small pass between two hills for 1.3-1.4 miles to either of two roads that head up the canyon. This route into this area is longer but easier than the one described previously, which required four-wheel drive for a steep section.
