Great fall loop hike with J. & M. and the doggies on Peavine Peak from the Red Metal trailhead.  This is a very nice area, not heavily used and seemingly remote for being so close to Reno. There are a variety of possible loop routes.

Trailhead directions: Highway 395 frontage road on the southwest side of the highway between Red Rock and Cold Springs exits. Take the dirt road at the summit of the frontage road. Standard cars should park before the railroad crossing. High-clearance vehicles take the left fork immediately after crossing the railroad tracks. The short road (about 1000 ft) to the trailhead parking is rutted and steep.
