Finally, a day with good weather and new snow, and it’s spring break. Went cross-country skiing at Tahoe Meadows, up to “Chickadee Ridge”, named for these birds, which are aggressive and wanting a handout. The snow was great, about 2 ft of fresh powder, tough for breaking trail but nice for downhill.

A great day for cross-country skiing at Kyburz Flats.  Except for a few bare spots on the first mile of Henness Pass Road from the highway (could have driven that), there was a perfect amount of snow: just enough to cover and ski on, but no effort to break a trail.  This route goes to the  Wheeler Sheep Camp (Basque shepherder oven exhibit), then around the Flats and up to a nice high meadow. The weather started out foggy, but turned sunny.

Went on a short cross-country ski run up to Tahoe Meadows with J. The snow was okay but not great, about 2 inches of new snow on top of hard-pack. Nice weather with views of Lake Tahoe, a little windy. Saw these traction kite skiers/snowboarders out in the meadows.

A short solo cross-country ski run in Donner Memorial State Park this morning after yesterday’s snow storm. First time out in the snow this winter. Nice to get out. There was less snow around Truckee than I expected–just enough but barely enough to ski on the paved roads in the campground area.
