Grouse Lake / Mokelumne Wilderness Area

From GrouseLake20080927

Photo Album
Another great overnight backpacking trip with M., to Grouse Lake in the Mokelumne Wilderness Area, Eldorado National Forest, near Carson Pass (Hwy 88) in California. On the return, took a detour up to the summit of Deadwood Peak, with great views of Roundtop Peak, Fourth of July Lake, and all around.

Trailhead: Park at the boat ramp at the spillway of Upper Blue Lake or on the road nearby. Take the metal pedestrian bridge across the spillway, then turn immediately left to the trailhead (do not go straight ahead across the dam itself).

Nice fall hike on a not-so-spectacular section of the Pacific Crest Trail, north from Henness Pass Road near Jackson Meadow Reservoir. Still need to do the second half of this section from California Hwy 49 south.

Can anyone identify the spiked red berries in the photo above?

Granite Chief

From GraniteChief20080907

Took the easy way up, the Cable Car at Squaw Valley Ski Resort to High Camp at 8300 ft elevation. Then hiked over the ridge to meet up with the Pacific Crest Trail where we turned back south in deep snow a couple of years ago, headed north on the section we missed up to Granite Chief peak, then followed of the Granite Chief Trail back to Squaw Valley. That’s a marmot in the photo above.
